Evolution of Elliptical Exercise Machines an Example of a Quick Study
The Evolution of elliptical exercise machines has been extremely quick. It was only the mid 1990s when the thought of getting a full cardiovascular workout without impact on the joints was first introduced as a true concept when bars were introduced to gliding foot rests that swiveled back and forth, simulating the motion of walking on air. By 1997 the full design of an elliptical machine was introduced, and this version was supposed to rival the intensity of a treadmill workout as well.
Since that time the evolution of elliptical exercise machines has seen many exercise manufacturers not only borrow from this simple design, but also add their own unique touches, thus making claims of supremacy over their competitors. Today elliptical exercise machines have become quite technologically advanced down to the smallest details. Many machines come with sensors on the bars where the hands are placed. These are used to take a person's pulse as he or she works out. There are also foot rests that are slip resistant.
There is no coincidence that elliptical trainers are used widely by seniors or people who are in physical therapy or are coming back from an injury and wanting to get back into an exercise program. The non-impact approach causes less stress on the knees in particular.
The debate over whether you can get as good of a workout on an elliptical machine as you can on a treadmill is still brewing. Many fitness professionals agree that if you are training for a running event and do not have access to the outdoors, a treadmill is still probably a better bet to get you into competitive shape. Used and refurbished models of elliptical trainers have hit the market as well, and a person should use caution when purchasing this type of machine. Discounts can be as high as 50 percent off of retail, but a truly refurbished machine should be scrutinized and come with some sort of warranty.
