Lower back toning exercises must be done with care

Lower back toning exercises are one of the least popular exercises out there. Most of us are either obsessed about how big our arms or if our stomach is tight. But the back is a muscle often overlooked, until it hurts of course.

Millions of Americans suffer from lower back pain, another reason why it is important to incorporate some sort of lower back toning exercises in your exercise regimen as soon as possible. Those who do may also enjoy the benefits of having a firmer stomach as well. As a matter of fact those with a strong stomach are less likely to have back problems in the first place.

One of the simplest lower back toning exercises is the back extension. The way to do this exercise is to lie face down on the floor. Clasp your hands together behind your head. Then raise your chest off the ground as far as you can. Chances are you can only move a few inches, but that's okay. You will feel the back muscles working. If you can hold in the highest position for a few seconds, this could even be better. Do not do this if you are in pain prior to the exercise.

The thing to watch for with lower back toning exercises is the pain level. If after you are done exercising, there is a soreness, usually that is okay. But if an almost back-spasm like pain occurs for the next 24 hours you should likely not do the exercise until you are cleared by a doctor to do so.

Lower back toning exercises can be tricky, as many chiropractors may be against doing a lot of them, for fear of hurting your back. It may be best to check with a back specialist to get their opinion on what are the most effective and safest lower back toning exercises for you. And don't forget to take care of your stomach muscles as well. A health stomach and healthy back are essential as they are opposing muscle groups that rely on each other.
